SCHOLARSHIP
There is considerably more scholarship in the area of visual narrative than most educators or, indeed, most outside the areas of comics publishing and production are aware. Here is a starting point for your investigations:
Sequart Research and Literacy Organization
Sequart is devoted to promoting comics as a serious art form and to the study of popular culture. It produces books, documentary films, and online articles on comics and graphic novels.
Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship
An open access and open peer-reviewed digital journal of comics scholarship that includes articles, call for papers, and a variety of other features for those within and outside of academia.
Comics Forum
A forum dedicated to increasing the availability and accessibility of comics scholarship through academic conferences that bring together scholars, artists, and fans of the genre.
Comics Research
A great starting point for comics scholarship that features annotated lists of book-length studies of the comics form.
Updates, announcements and other comics news can be found at their blog site, Comics Research & Such.
Institute for Comics Studies
A non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the study, understanding, recognition and cultural legitimacy of
comics.
